Burlington wins $6.7M DoW grant for fire station
The planned facility, at 2100 N. Roosevelt Ave., directly supports the plant by stationing full-time heavy firefighting apparatus, advanced emergency response equipment and expanded staffing significantly closer to the installation's gates. The new facility will also handle residential and commercial calls in northern Burlington.
The grant follows a formal endorsement by plant leadership during the federal fiscal 2026 application cycle.
"Cultivating strong mutual aid partnerships is absolutely vital to our mission, our workforce, and our force protection posture," said Lt. Col. Daniel V. Nosse, commander of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. "As a critical node in our nation’s Organic Industrial Base, IAAAP produces quality medium- and large-caliber munitions essential to the Joint Force. Rapid, heavy emergency response capability is not just an operational asset, it is a life-safety imperative for our workforce and our surrounding communities."
Currently, the ammunition plant's emergency services division operates with minimal staffing and relies on the Burlington Fire Department, the only full-time professional department in the immediate area, as its primary mutual aid partner for major emergencies, structural fires and multi-patient incidents.
While a temporary facility operates about 4 miles from the installation, it also houses minimal staff. The permanent station will reduce heavy apparatus travel distance, cutting response times to the installation.
Final grant agreements and project timelines will be coordinated between the city of Burlington and the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation in the coming weeks. The funding is being awarded through the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation’s Defense Community Infrastructure Program.
The Defense Community Infrastructure Program is a competitive grant program administered by the Department of War’s Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation. It provides grant assistance to state and local governments to address physical infrastructure deficiencies that support military installations and improve the resilience and quality of life for service members and neighboring communities.
